On 7 June 2009, I was elected to a seat in the European Parliament. I was a cross-border candidate, a Dutchman who was elected for a Flemish party in Belgium. This marked my fourth time working in the Parliament. Each time I had been there in a different capacity.
Here, I will describe the workings, growth and power of the European bureaucracy as seen from the inside. In the EU, the institutional elite always know best. It borders on sheer political and intellectual arrogance. There is no alarm-bell procedure; no emergency stop button. The Euro has become an ideology, apart from any political, economic or monetary logic. Reform is needed more than ever…
